Diagnose spray tan gun clogs, uneven output, and airflow issues with practical fixes. Learn when to clean, replace, or stop before you damage your equipment.
Quick answer
Most spray tanning equipment problems come down to three things: a clogged gun, a dirty or saturated filter, or a worn-out lamp. Start by cleaning the gun with warm water and a soft brush, then check the filter and airflow. If the problem persists after two cleanings, replace the clogged or worn part rather than pushing it further.
Spray Gun Clogs and Uneven Output
If your spray tan gun is spitting, pulsing, or leaving blotchy patches, the nozzle or needle is likely clogged with dried solution. This is the most common spray tan gun troubleshooting call. Turn off the machine, remove the nozzle and needle, and soak them in warm water for 10–15 minutes. Use a soft brush to clear any visible residue. Never use a pin or wire to poke through the nozzle—it scratches the metal and makes future clogs worse. Reassemble and test on a paper towel. If the spray pattern is still uneven, the needle may be bent or the nozzle worn. At that point, replacement is the only reliable fix.
Prevention matters more than cure. After every session, run warm water through the gun for 30 seconds, then spray a small amount of cleaning solution. This stops solution from drying inside the air passages. If you use the same gun daily, do a full breakdown cleaning once a week.
Airflow and Overspray Problems
Weak airflow or excessive overspray usually points to a clogged filter or a blocked fan intake. Check the filter first. If it is coated with dried solution, air cannot pass through, so the gun sprays unevenly and you breathe more overspray. A rinse-and-reuse filter can be cleaned with low-pressure warm water and left to air dry completely before reinstalling. Never put a wet filter back in the fan—moisture encourages mold and restricts airflow.
If the filter is clean but airflow is still weak, inspect the fan blades and the intake grille for lint or dried solution. A soft vacuum brush works well here. Also check that the gun’s air hose is not kinked or cracked. A cracked hose leaks pressure and makes the gun sputter. Replace any hose that shows visible damage.
When to Stop and Replace Instead of Repair
Some problems are not worth fixing. If the gun body is cracked, the motor is making grinding noises, or the air compressor is losing pressure, stop. Continuing to use damaged equipment can ruin your tan results and may be unsafe. For tanning beds or booths, if lamps are flickering or producing weak tanning output after cleaning, they are at the end of their life. Replacing lamps is a straightforward job, but you must use the correct certified kit for your unit. If you cannot find a certified replacement, do not substitute a generic lamp—it may not match the electrical spec and could damage the bed. At that point, contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician.
Diagnosis: symptom, cause, action, stop point
- Symptom: Gun spits or sprays unevenly: Likely cause: Dried solution in nozzle or needle. Corrective action: Soak nozzle and needle in warm water for 10–15 minutes, then brush clean. Never poke with wire. If uneven spray continues after two cleanings, replace the nozzle and needle.
- Symptom: Weak airflow, heavy overspray: Likely cause: Clogged filter or blocked fan intake. Corrective action: Remove filter, rinse with low-pressure warm water, air dry completely. Vacuum fan intake. If airflow does not improve with a clean, dry filter, check the air hose for cracks or kinks. Replace if damaged.
- Symptom: Tanning bed lamps flicker or output is weak: Likely cause: Lamps at end of life. Corrective action: Replace with a certified lamp kit for your specific model. Do not substitute generic lamps. If you cannot find a certified kit for your unit, stop and consult a technician. Using wrong lamps can damage the bed.
